G. Cappellano
One of the regions greatest traditionalists, Teobaldo Cappellano
was possibly Barolo's most compelling personality. In the early 80's
he banned all journalists from his cellar unless they agreed to review
his wines without scores. Sadly he passed away in 2009 leaving his
legacy to his son Augusto.
Cappellano make just 800 cases of Barolo per year from the famous Gabutti Vineyard on Serralunga's best slope. Most of the production disappears quickly into private cellars in Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
Two thirds of the production grown from grafted rootstock makes up
Pie Rupestris, a smaller amount produced from a small parcel planted
on its own roots makes up the legendary Pie Franco.
Is this what Barolo tasted like before Phylloxera?

“Cappellano's 2012 Barolo Rupestris is a striking wine.
Bright red cherry, mint, white pepper and cranberry give the 2012 much of its lifted, airy personality. Of the two Cappellano Barolos, the Rupestris is usually deep, rich and overt (in relative terms of course), but today, the Rupestris is much more finessed than I remember seeing in the past. Rose petal, dried herbs, red fruits and herbs reappear on the finish. Simply put, the 2012 is a fabulous Barolo Rupestris. Naturally, the tannins need time to soften, but the 2012 is incredibly harmonious today.” Drink 2020 – 2042 A Galloni, Vinous.com |
“The 2012 Barolo Piè Franco opens with striking, explosive aromatics.
Rose petal, orange peel, mint, sweet tobacco and spice notes all blossom in the glass, effortless, silky and gracious to the core, the 2012 Piè Franco is a jewel of a wine. Soft tannins make the 2012 easy to drink young, but there is more than enough depth to support many years of fine drinking. Ultimately, though, the 2012 is a wine that fills all the dimensions. It is at once high-toned and aromatic, and yet has vertical depth to it that is compelling.” Drink 2020 – 2042 A Galloni, Vinous.com |
